Seung Yu, the Senior Executive Director of the Office of Postsecondary Readiness (OPSR) at the Department of Education (DOE), has been chosen as Stuyvesant’s next principal, a DOE employee told The Spectator.

Before Yu joined the OPSR in 2017, he was the founding principal at the Academy for Software Engineering (AFSE), a high school near Union Square with a focus on preparing students for careers in computer science. His former school takes a less traditional approach to education, with a 9:00 a.m. start time and a mentorship program that matches each student with someone in the tech industry.

Prior to his seven years as principal at AFSE, he was an English teacher at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Bay Ridge.

He was chosen through the C-30 process, in which a select group appointed by Superintendent Vivian Orlen interviews and rates applicants. The superintendent then interviewed the top candidates and selected one, submitting for final approval by School Chancellor Richard Carranza.

Yu’s appointment comes at a time when Stuyvesant is divided on how to handle this fall’s potential reopening. Stuyvesant’s previous principal, Eric Contreras, stepped down on July 31 after previously resigning and then rescinding his resignation in 2018.

Yu has yet to respond to a request for comment.
