New Generation of All-Stars

The NBA All-Star Game is an annual exhibition game that features 24 of the best players in the league. However, despite the game’s star-studded roster, it is not as competitive or intense as one might expect. Fear of injury results in most players putting little effort and hardly playing defense. None of these star players want to risk getting injured in an exhibition game, especially when they need to be healthy and ready for the playoffs. As a result, the All-Star game is more of a way for these players to have some fun and put on a show for the fans.

Regardless of the game’s outcome, though, merely playing in the game and being named one of the 24 All-Stars is a significant achievement for players. The All-Star starters are determined through a voting process by the fans, players, and media, while the reserves are voted on by the 30 NBA coaches. The fans make up 50 percent of the vote for the game’s starters, while the players and media each account for 25 percent of the vote. The decision to provide fans with a significant role in deciding the starters has been widely acclaimed, as dedicated fans are given the opportunity to have their favorite players recognized.

This year, LeBron James made his 20th All-Star appearance, showing his dominance in the league for two decades now and his unparalleled legacy in the NBA. Unlike NBA veterans who have consistently graced the All-Star stage for years, this year’s All-Star game features a fresh group of young players in the early stages of their NBA journey. Among them are three players who have now become two-time All-Stars: Utah Jazz guard Tyrese Haliburton, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards. This year also saw multiple players making their first All-Star appearances, introducing a new generation of talent in the NBA. Here are the newly crowned All-Stars this year.

1. Paolo Banchero

First, we have Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero. As the first pick in the 2022 NBA draft and the 2023 Rookie of the Year, it is no surprise that Banchero has earned All-Star status and become such a dominant player in only his second season playing in the NBA. This season, he has shown no signs of slowing down, averaging an impressive 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. 

In the February 14 game against the New York Knicks, Banchero scored 36 points, securing the win for his team. Earlier on January 3, he scored a career-high 43 points in a double-overtime game against the Sacramento Kings, with many of those points being clutch shots in the fourth quarter and overtime. Unfortunately, his team was unable to close out the game, resulting in a 138-135 loss to the Kings. Nevertheless, witnessing such a new player score this many points speaks volumes about his talent and potential.

2. Jalen Brunson

Next, we have Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson. Brunson has faced considerable doubt by many, having been drafted low as the 33rd overall pick in the 2018 draft. However, this season Brunson significantly elevated his game, averaging career-high statistics across the board and leading the Knicks to the current fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. As of February 27, Brunson is averaging an exceptional 27.7 points per game, tying him for sixth place in the league in scoring, alongside 6.7 assists per game. He achieved his career-high of 50 points this season against the Phoenix Suns on December 15 and has recorded multiple other games with double-doubles. 

Despite being on the shorter side at 6'2'' and not possessing the explosive athleticism of other NBA players, Brunson doesn’t let his physical shortcomings hinder his game. He excels at facilitating offense with his smart decision-making and playmaking abilities. While he can score on his own, Brunson is also a very unselfish player who creates opportunities for his teammates. With that blend of talents, it will be interesting to see how Brunson and the Knicks perform in this year’s playoffs.

3. Tyrese Maxey

Philadelphia 76ers point guard Tyrese Maxey, currently in his fourth season in the NBA, is another young star who has earned a spot in the All-Star Game this year. Maxey is putting up very impressive numbers this season, averaging 25.8 points and 6.4 assists per game as of February 27. Playing alongside 2023 MVP center Joel Embiid, Maxey forms a formidable duo that has propelled the 76ers to the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. However, he has proven to be a strong leader as well. Even in Embiid’s recent absence due to a knee injury, Maxey led the 76ers to victory in multiple games. Most notably, Maxey scored a career-high 51 points against the Jazz on February 1, winning the game 127-124.

Maxey is known for his speed and confidence on the court. His agility with the ball and extremely fast first step make him very hard to guard when driving towards the basket. He is a high-energy player on both offense and defense, and he is a very efficient pick-and-roll scorer. If Embiid is able to make a speedy recovery and return to the court, the 76ers are sure to be strong contenders in this year's playoffs.

4. Scottie Barnes

Lastly, as an injury replacement, Toronto Raptors forward and guard Scottie Barnes was selected as an All-Star this year. Barnes was drafted as the fourth pick in the 2021 draft and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year that same year. Now in only his third year in the league, this young star has reached All-Star status. As of February 27, Barnes is averaging almost a double-double, with 20 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. 

Standing at 6'7'' with a 7'3'' wingspan, Barnes is able to utilize his length and size to guard any position on defense, including centers in the paint. His versatility is not limited to his defense; on offense, he is a skilled ball handler with great raw athleticism, even capable of running the point at times. Despite the Raptors’ current struggles, sitting at the 12th seed in the East, Barnes has proven to be a strong player for the Raptors, leading in scoring for most games.

All in all, it is reassuring to know that there are so many talented young players in the league. These young All-Stars represent the next generation and future faces of the NBA. They are the ones who will be tasked with taking over the league as the current NBA veterans retire and take their place in the Hall of Fame.
