The Road to November 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Many of the current Stuyvesant seniors and some juniors will be eligible to vote in the 60th presidential election on November 5, 2024. In the midst of college applications and the hectic life of a Stuyvesant student, it can be difficult to keep up with the tumultuous American political landscape. To address this, The Spectator is starting a new election literacy project. As this historic election unfolds, the Opinions Department will publish polls, facts about the candidates, key swing state updates, and other content throughout the election season.

Election Updates: Crimes & Close Races

Presidential:

  • Jurors unanimously convicted Trump of 34 felony counts of falsified business files in the hush money trial taking place in New York City this past month.
    • This is the first time in American history that a former US president has been convicted of criminal charges.
    • Trump continues to maintain his innocence and has publicly denounced the trial saying, “This is a scam. There’s a rigged trial,” and elaborating that witnesses on his side were “crucified” by the presiding Judge Merchan.
    • The Trump campaign said it received $34.8 million in donations in the seven hours following the trial’s verdict, with many of his supporters feeling as though the trial was an attempt by Democrats to persecute Trump.
  • Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, faces three felony charges for lying on a federal gun-purchase form about his use of narcotics. His trial is currently underway in Delaware.
  • Biden and Trump have agreed to participate in two debates, the first of which will be on June 27, 2024.

Congressional:

  • According to POLITICO analysis, though both parties set out to flip a substantial number of seats in 2024, the number of competitive seats has narrowed due to redistricting and fundraising giving certain candidates more secure paths to win. Whoever wins the House majority in 2024 is likely to lead by only a few seats, as the Republican party does now.

Local:

  • The New York primary will be held on June 25, 2024. All state-level seats within the State Assembly and State Senate as well as Congressional contests will be on the ballot. Polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Seniors, make sure to vote if you are eligible!
    • Early voting is also available, and it will take place from Saturday, June 15 to Sunday, June 23.
